Ph.D./M.S. Program

Request Program Information. Online Information Request for both the Ph.D. and M.S. program

Applications. Students apply to the Ph.D./M.S. program by filling out the Graduate School’s Ph.D. online application or M.S. online application. Applications should be completed by February 1st, but in order to receive full consideration for financial aid, you should complete your application before January 15.

GRE scores should be submitted to the Graduate School at the State University of New York at Buffalo (not State University College of New York at Buffalo) using the school code 2925. Leave the area of study blank. We do not require any subject tests in the GREs. International applicants who do not speak English as their native language also must take the TOEFL examination.  Three letters of recommendation should be mailed by the writer directly to the program at the address below. References can also be sent by email: ub-evb@buffalo.edu. We do not have a specific form for letters of recommendation.  Official transcripts of undergraduate and any graduate work should be mailed to:

The Program in Evolution, Ecology and Behavior
University at Buffalo
876 Natural Sciences Complex, North Campus
Buffalo, NY 14260.

Admissions.  Our program offers training in a diverse array of subjects and a key component of the application process is identifying a faculty member with whom you wish to work. We strongly encourage students to correspond with potential advisers before applying to the program to determine whether the adviser is accepting new students into his/her lab. Applications are reviewed by and must be accepted by both the Graduate Affairs Committee and the potential advisor.  Admissions is based on the strength of the student’s undergraduate record, letters of recommendation and scores in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Applicants should have undergraduate grade point averages of 3.0 or greater.

Funding.  Funding for students in the form of fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships may be offered to students when available from faculty research grants, the faculty member’s home department or other University and College of Arts and Sciences sources. In order to receive full consideration for financial aid, you should complete your application and make sure all supporting materials (GRE scores, transcripts, letters of reference) are in our office by January 1. Additional information about financial aid is available from the Graduate School.
